creative process: window into Lolita’s process

12 Aug

Lolita, our Lady of Music for Art, recently shared some of the initial thinking behind her cinematic clip, Galactic Encounter ( which focuses on synthesizer sounds rather than the acoustical instrument samples.  She was pointing out that synth sounds tend to be more complex and more challenging to work with because they hog a great deal of the frequency band.  Because of that she was working extra hard at equalizing voices.

Apparently there has been an additional dynamic in play – our Lady has received a great deal of feedback from her website community about previous work – specifically that her clips are interesting but leave folks hanging, unsatisfied because they are too short.  So it seems the additional intention with this “galactic” project of hers was to stretch out and compose something longer, something the listener could sit with for at least a minute or so.

The seed of the “galactic” project was a clip she had written for a low synth sound, called “clavipad”, which evoked in her mind some mystery, some sense of the vastness of outer space.  She set out to develop this concept of a sonic depiction of outer space and perhaps some spacecraft.  The goals of depicting outer space and developing synthesizer sounds were compatible.  She broke the project into bitesize pieces, developing over several months 4 different effects which would combine to paint the space picture.

Each effect was born through a combination of intentional choices and spontaneous messing with effects.

On top of these effects she layered a dramatic electric guitar solo, and the solo was repeated with a second guitar in a dramatic counterpoint.

Finally, she

introduced an orchestral ostinato at the end of the piece which fades out along with the background effects to suggest that the story continues, that there is more to come.
