creative process: Compression and Expansion

31 May

Sometimes doing a little is as powerful as doing a lot.  Sometimes simply reinforcing with a baby step an important concept in your project, your creative discipline, your mundane life, is as significant as making the “big” moves.

So it is with a blog.  Perhaps you only have a few minutes before you must take in Deuce the Spaniel Mix, the gentle canine muse, for his teeth cleaning.  But staying in touch with your readers, with your blogging process, is important.  so today is not about lengthy, developed writing, but just about putting down a few words.  The big picture is covered by just a short, caring stroke of the brush this morning.

This is a form of compression.  It is also a form of permission to yourself – acknowledgment of the needs and demands of the day – a sort of self negotiation as to how you can continue to live a creative life even as the mundane demands are particularly in your face.

It is about going back to basics – in your work, your life.  cleaning the kitchen and making it kosher again.  taking an old bit of audio and refreshing it.  going out to one good artist candidate and soliciting a showing on the website.  taking time to speak with a friend, to encourage an employee.

This all will feed back powerfully into your creative process – you will be relaxed, and refreshed and feel good about yourself.  and you will surprise yourself with unexpected productive leaps forward and great commercial success!
