Creative Cycle: Painful Points of Darkness

13 Aug

Our Composer of Music for Art embarked recently on a new project.  She has a vision of an audioscape for a beautiful abstract painting called “rose garden”.  The rose suggests some depth of emotion associated with loves past and present, with the joys and sorrows of loves lost and won.  She knows where she wants to arrive with this work, but she has been groping, struggling in the dark, finding her way to right choices in sounds, rhythms, melodies, balances.  How much she wants to share this as a finished work – but she has not yet arrived back to the light.  And she is challenged with some feelings of loneliness, despair, pain.

This condition we find ourselves in, a psychological darkness as we grope through a dark tunnel of unsolved creative problems, can be challenging – but potentially a rewarding point in the creative cycle.  For it is at this point in our creative work that we are most fundamentally engaged in that profound transformation of intellectual concept to concrete form – we are truly in the most profound state of partnership at this point with the Creator herself.

This is a time in your creative cycle when you should embrace yourself warmly, nurture yourself, provide to yourself lots of positive feedback about the good work you do, and the good works you do, how you care about others, even during this time that limits social interaction for the sake of deep connection with a birthing creation.  It is your time to connect with a spiritual reality – a reality associated with concentration on details.  A reality associated with patient step by step, baby step process, progress, focus on organization.

Hold yourself warmly, and be held warmly by the Creator.  Be aware that profound, subtle growth takes place during these special, albeit lonely times.  Be assured that you will find the light once again and the special joy of sharing.

spark on!
