In the creative process, we find ourselves landing fully in the “execution” stage. We have our concept, we have chosen our mediums, and we have begun to transform concept into concrete form. Perhaps there can be a sense of being bogged down at this point. The exuberance of the new idea has perhaps worn somewhat thin. It may feel as if we have entered a dark tunnel, groping for solutions to problems of execution, facing up to the need for new learning, finding patience to discover and act upon all the little baby steps necessary to get from A to Z.
This is a wonderful moment to reaffirm what our existence as creative individuals is all about. It is about this very walk “through the darkness”. This process of evolving something brand new – or describing something in the world in a fresh and special way. Every stroke of the brush, every selection of a note, of an effect, is moving Heaven and Earth! In each project, when we enter this execution stage, this walk through the dark tunnel, we can feel, and appreciate more intensely, the significance of each creative decisions, each physical execution which creates transformation from concept to concrete.
Shakespeare’s King Lear said, upon a daughter’s plucking his eyes out “I see feelingly”. Don’t despair your walk through the tunnel. You can still see – feelingly! You are aware of your process, and it’s value – its centrality to your very existence. Feel it. Be awash in it. Enjoy the opportunity of this “darkness” to be detached from the mundane world in a way which is gifted to artists like no other creatures of G-d’s creation.
